Newcastle had taken a surprise lead in the seventh minute when wing-back Jetro Williams scored his first goal for the club, cutting in from the left to fire into the top corner.
But by half-time Liverpool were ahead, courtesy of two goals from Sadio Mané. First, he received a cut-back from left-back Andy Robertson and scored from the edge of the area, and then he was beat the defence to a through-ball from substitute Roberto Firmino to poke his side in front. Midway through the second-half, Firmino was again the provider, setting-up Mo Salah to slide the ball past the Newcastle keeper for Liverpool’s third.
Manchester United beat Leicester City by a single goal at Old Trafford. United took the lead when Leicester defender Çaglar Söyüncü needlessly fouled Marcus Rashford in the box, and Rashford himself converted the resulting penalty. Leicester had a lot of the ball but rarely threatened the opposition goal, and it was the home side who came closest to scoring again when Rashford’s free-kick struck the angle of post and bar.
Chelsea had an impressive 5 – 2 win away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. After a slow start to the match, Chelsea took the lead when Fikayo Tomori scored his first goal for the club with a curling shot from 30 yards. Three minutes later they extended their lead with a shot on the turn from Tammy Abraham in the box, and the striker continued his fine start to the season with a powerful header before half-time.
After half-time, he then started and finished a move for his hat-trick, before scoring his fourth of the afternoon, this time in his own net, when he was adjudged to have got the last touch on a header by Romain Saïss. Patrick Cutrone scrambled another goal back for the home side, before Mason Mount scored for the visitors with almost the last kick of the match.
Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Crystal Palace 4 - 0 at White Hart Lane, Spurs came into this match in indifferent form but they put that behind them with a scintillating first-half performance, taking the lead through Son Hueng-min’s cut in front the left and found the bottom corner. Soon afterwards it was 2 – 0, when Patrick van Aanholt deflected a cross from Serge Aurier into his own net. Aurier then provided the cross to the back post which Son volleyed home to make it three, and then a sweeping move saw Erik Lamela add the fourth before half-time. That concluded the scoring for the day, although both sides had their chances after the break.
Norwich City stunned the defending champions Manchester City by beating them 3 – 2 at Carrow Road. Norwich took a shock lead when Kenny McLean was allowed a free header at the near post to score from a corner. And the mood in the ground turned to almost disbelief ten minutes later when Teemu Pukki broke free and unselfishly squared it for Todd Cantwell to side foot to make it 2 – 0. Raheem Stirling hit a post for City before they did pull a goal back on the stroke of half-time through Sergio Aguero, after a fine cross from Bernardo Silva.
Then catastrophic defending allowed Norwich to re-establish their two goal lead. Nicolás Otamendi dithered in possession on the edge of his own box, allowing Emiliano Buendía to steal the ball off him and pass to Pukki, who lifted the ball into the net. Manchester City huffed and puffed but, in the end, all they had to show for their efforts was a low drive from Rodri from the edge of the area, the first for his new club.
