Alexis Sanchez has suggested to BBC Sport that he left Manchester United due to lack of playing time.

The former Arsenal forward has joined Italian giants Inter Milan on loan from Premier League powerhouse United in the summer transfer window.

The 30-year-old forward switch to the Red Devils from Premier League rivals Arsenal in January 2018 in what was essentially a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Sanchez told BBC Sport: “I’m very happy I went to Manchester United. I’ve always said that. It’s the club that’s won the most in England.

“When I went to Arsenal it was fantastic - I was happy there - but United were growing at the time, they were buying players to win something. I wanted to join them and win everything. I don’t regret going there.”

The Chilean added: “I think that I’m happy when I play for my national team. I was happy at Manchester United too, but I’ve always said to my friends: I want to play.

“If they would let me play I’ll do my best. Sometimes I’d play 60 minutes then I wouldn’t play the next game - and I didn’t know why.”

Manchester United struggles

Sanchez was one of the best players in the Premier League during his time at Arsenal, and much was expected of the Chile international forward when he made the move to United.

However, the 30-year-old struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford and was not even in matchday squads on many occasions.

According to WhoScored, Sanchez made 12 starts for United during the second half of the 2017-18 campaign, scoring two goals and providing three assists. The forward also played twice in the Champions League for the Red Devils that campaign.

Last season, Sanchez made just nine starts and only 11 substitute appearances in the Premier League for United, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the process, according to WhoScored.

The forward also made two starts and two substitute appearances in the Champions League for the Red Devils last season.

Inter Milan adventure

The past few months have been tough for Sanchez, and Inter represent a fresh start for the 30-year-old.

With Antonio Conte in charge of the Nerazzurri, the Milanese giants are aiming to return to their glory days and challenge for the Scudetto, and Sanchez will play a key role in that quest.
