As announced on Arsenal’s official website, the 30-year-old midfielder has moved to Italian club Roma on a season-long loan deal.
According to Roma’s official website, the Serie A outfit have paid the Gunners a loan fee of €3 million (£2.73m) for the Armenia international, with add-ons of up to €100,000 (£90,922.31).
Mkhitaryan is delighted to have made the switch to the Giallorossi and is looking forward to a successful season with them.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to begin a new chapter, with a great club,” Mkhitaryan told Roma’s official website. “I know what this club is all about and I am sure we can achieve great things together.”
Disappointing Arsenal spell
Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal from Premier League rivals Manchester United in January 2018 in what was essentially a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez.
The midfielder arrived at the Gunners with a good reputation, but just like at United, the 30-year-old struggled to make an impact at the Emirates Stadium.
The former Borussia Dortmund star made 59 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, scoring nine goals in the process.
Mkhitaryan made just 19 starts and only six substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Gunners last season, scoring six goals and providing four assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
The midfielder also made six starts and five substitute appearances in the Europa League for the North London outfit during the 2018-19 campaign, providing three assists in the process.
AS Roma adventure
Mkhitaryan may have failed to do much of note in England with Manchester United or Arsenal, but he could be a success at Roma.
Roma are an ambitious club and have an attack-minded team, and the Armenia international will fit in nicely in head coach Paulo Fonseca’s plan.
