Atletico Madrid have reportedly signed Mexican international Hector Herrera from Portuguese club FC Porto according to Madrid based sports news outlet Diario AS.

However, there is some delays in confirming the move as the 29-year old waits to be granted his Portuguese citizenship. This will enable Atletico Madrid to register him as an European Union resident, meaning, he will not take up one of their three allotted EU spots on their roster, thereby keeping that position free for another player.

Herrera joined the two time European champions back in 2013 for a reported fee of $12 M Euros from Mexican giants Pachuca and he is in the final year of his contract. Since joining six years ago, he has won the Primeira Liga title last season and a couple of Portuguese Super Cups.

The club are currently in the thick of the race for the league title this year again with arch-rivals Benfica, being two points behind with just two more matches to go.

Herrera had been heavily linked with the likes of Inter and Roma in Serie A, but the move never materialised, mainly as reported by O Jogo, that it was believed that he had agreed to sign for the 10 time Spanish champions already.

This transfer saga could run for some time yet.
