English Premier League: Kompany Stunner Takes City Closer to the Title

Everton kept their faint hopes of European football alive by beating Burnley 2–0 at Goodison Park.

Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance of securing third place as they lost 1 – 0 to Bournemouth, and had two men sent off. First to see red was South Korean international Son Heung-min for a push on Jefferson Lerma, followed by substitute Juan Foyt for a bad tackle. The nine men thought they had held out for a draw, but Nathan Aké’s late header made a bad day worse.

West Ham United beat Southampton 3 -0 at the London Stadium, with Marco Arnautovic scoring his first goals since January, and Ryan Fredericks netting his first Premier League goal.

Cardiff City’s relegation back to the Championship was confirmed when they were beaten 3 – 2 at home by Crystal Palace. Wilfried Zaha fired the visitors in front, only for Martin Kelly’s own goal to give the Welsh side hope. Michy Batshuayi then put Palace ahead again, and Andros Townsend scored the goal that confirmed the inevitable, with Bobby Reid’s goal just a late consolation.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their hopes of European football next season by beating relegated Fulham 1-0 at Molineux, Leander Deendocker’s volley enough to give the home side all three points.

Liverpool ensured the Premier League fight would go to the last day of the season by beating Newcastle United 3–2 at St. James Park. Liverpool took the lead through Virgil van Dyck only for Christian Atsu to bring the home side level. Mo Salah put the visitors ahead again, but Solomón Rondon equalised for Newcastle again. It was left to substitute Divock Origi to head the winner for the Reds.

Chelsea moved above Tottenham Hotspur into third place in the table by beating Watford 3 – 0 at Stamford Bridge. After a goalless first half, Chelsea scored twice in three minutes, due to headers from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and David Luiz, and then Gonzalo Higuain added a third from close range.

Manchester United’s hopes of a Champions League place for next season were finally ended as they could only draw 1 – 1 away at bottom side Huddersfield Town. United took an early lead through Scott McTominay, but were then pegged back when Isaac Mbenza scored his first Premier League goal.

Arsenal could only draw 1 - 1 with Brighton meaning that they could also not finish in the Champions League positions. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal the lead from the penalty spot, but they failed to build on that, and Glenn Murray got the equaliser for Brighton, also from the spot.

Monday

Manchester City secured a 1 – 0 win over Leicester City that is probably enough to guarantee then back-to-back Premier League titles. On a tense evening at the Etihad, it was, fittingly, their captain, Vincent Kompany, who won the match for them, with an unstoppable swerving shot from 25 yards.
