France v Uruguay Preview, Predictions & Tips

France will meet Uruguay on Friday afternoon in Novgorod with both teams having a good chance of reaching the semi-final.

Uruguay will need to take care of the French teenager, though it is hard to see a team with their defensive qualities allowing him as much space as the Argentines did.

The South Americans too, have a man in form in the shape of Edison Cavani, who scored both goals in their 2-1 victory over Portugal in the last round. Sadly for them, though, he is likely to miss the France tie with the calf injury that saw him hobble out of that match.

If he is unfit, then the two-time winners will rely even more on Cavani’s strike partner Luis Suarez, who has also picked up a knock in training but is expected to start on Friday.

The absence of Cavani may force Uruguay to play on the break, relying on the counter attack and, perhaps, playing for penalties. They are well equipped to do so, with the Atletico Madrid central defensive pairing of Diego Godin and Jose Maria Giminez, and Arsenal-bound Lucas Torreira marshalling play in front of them.

Key for France may, therefore, depend on the ability of their midfield to create chances for the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe. Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba had a fine game against Argentina, and will need to do so again.

France will start favourites, but it will be no surprise if it is a tight game that is decided by a single goal, or even goes to extra time and penalties.
