On Saturday, February 27, VFL Wolfsburg hosts FC Bayern Munich in week 23 of the German Bundesliga. The game will be played at the Volkswagen Arena in the city of Wolfsburg and will kick off at 14:30 BST.
The home side is currently 8th on the league table with 31 points from 22 games, while the visitors are top of the league, with 59 points from 22 games.
A win for the 8th placed team can see them rise to 6th position, while a defeat can see them drop to 10th place. Bayern Munich will retain their position at the summit of the division regardless of the outcome of this fixture.
Wolfsburg hustle for the Champions LeagueThe team from the Volkswagen Arena will be looking to make up the four point gap between them and the team in the last Champions League spot. They also are in a good position to make the Champions League quarter final this year, as they lead the tie 3-2 going back to the Volkswagen Arena.
The Wolves, managed by Dieter Hecking is in good form, with two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five games in all competition. These wins were against Ingolstadt in the league (2-0 on February 13), and Gent in the Champions League (2-3 on February 17).
Dieter Hecking’s team could only manage to draw their league games against FC Koln (1-1 on January 31), and Hertha BSC (1-1 on February 20). They however suffered defeat against Schalke 04 (3-0 on February 6).
Bayern stroll to the titleBayern Munich will be looking to wrap up the title as early as possible, so they can focus on winning the Champions League. They currently have an 8 point lead over second placed Borrusia Dortmund and have dropped only 7 points all season.
The Bavarians, managed by Pep Guardiola are in very good form, with three wins and two draws in their last five games in all competitions. Their wins include league victories against Augsburg (1-3 on February 14), and Darmstadt 98 (3-1 on February 20). They also knocked VFL Bochum out of the German Cup (0-3 on February 10).
The league leaders could only manage to draw their games against Bayer Leverkusen in the league (0-0 on February 6), and Juventus in the Champions League (2-2 on February 23).
Wolfsburg hasn’t kept a clean sheet in a competitive game in ten games. Against the league leaders, goalkeeper Koen Casteels who has been in goal in recent games will have to be at the very top of his form if his team is to get a positive result. Robert Lewandowski is favorite to win the German top scorer award, and has scored 22 goals in 21 games. The Wolfsburg defense will have to watch out for the Polish marksman for the entirety of the game.
Wolfsburg are a decent team at home, so this should be a very competitive game. I however expect Bayern Munich to show their quality and strengthen their title credentials with a hard fought victory.
