Ed Carpenter, or formally known as Everette Edward Carpenter, Jr. is a race car driver from the United States of America. He is currently competing in the IndyCar Series with his town called Ed Carpenter Racing. He is also known for being the stepson of Tony George, the founder of the Indy Racing League. He is the only individual who is both owner and driver of his team in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Ed competes exclusively in oval events.

Early Career

Ed’s success in racing can be dated back to 1989. He was a successful midget racer, even winning the national quarter-midget events in both Ohio and Maryland in 1996.

United States Automobile Club

Before racing in the IndyCar Series, Ed raced in different series in the United States Automobile Club. Ed’s best finish in the Regional Series was being in 3rd place. His best finish in the National Midget Car Series was finishing 2nd place at the Belleville Nationals. During his stint at the Silver Crown Series, Ed won the Rookie of the Race award. His best finish was 2nd for the Dominic’s of New York 100 held at the Richmond International Raceway. At the Sprints Car Series, Carpenter recorded the 3rd fastest qualifying time and won 6th place at the USAC Sprints Legends Classic held at Salem Speedway.

North American Auto Racing Series

In 2000, Ed started racing for the North American Auto Racing Series. It was not a successful time for Ed as he failed to qualify for the Chili Bowl, considered the biggest Midget race of the year.

IndyCar – Indy Lights Series

It was in 2002 when Ed joined the Indy Racing League. Ed managed to finish in 5th place for the season-opening held at the Kansas Speedway. His best finish was coming in at 2nd place at the Kentucky 100 held at the Kentucky Speedway. He also finished 3rd at the Michigan 100 and the Gateway 100, finishing the season ranked at 3rd place. His only victory at the Indy Lights race series was at the Futaba Freedom 100, the most prestigious race of the series.

IndyCar – IndyCar Series

Ed is considered one of the most experienced drivers in the series. 2021 marked his 19th season in the IndyCar competition.

Overall, Ed has had a total of 23 top-10 finishes since he started his team and also led one race for 12 consecutive seasons. He became the 10th driver in the Indianapolis 500 102-year history to win in three or more pole positions.
