John Martin
Ever since a he was a child, John Martin loved everything that moved fast. He began by riding trail bikes, and jet-ski's. Martin began racing in 1998, at the Rockhampton Kart Track, where he was racing in the junior national and light class, on a C.R.G.
In his very first year behind the wheel Martin won many races, and soon graduated to the Resa category. Podiums, pole positions and race wins continued and by 2001 Martin was one of the top 5 in the Resa category, and continuing his upward climb, Martin won the Resa QLD State Championship, the very next year.
In 2002, Martin once again moved up and was racing in the ICA Series, in a Trulli kart. His ascent continued, with every jump only enforcing the fact that he had immense amounts of talent. Martin raced in the Ford Kartstars Series for a few events, and by 2003, he set pole in the Ford Kartstars, at Geelong, and finished second in the series. He also began racing in the CIK Series.
2004 was Martin's final year in kart racing and also a significant year, as he clinched the prestigious Arrows factory drive, and made the most of the opportunity by winning many races. His next step, like many other drivers was racing in Formula Fords, and he went on to compete in both the NSW State Formula Ford Championship as well as the Victorian Formula Ford Championship.
The 2005 Australian Formula Ford championship was an impressive year with Martin accumulating an astounding 20 wins in 42 races. He finished in second place on seven occasions while he was third in another 3 races. The wins included 2 national races as well as the national round.
He set 2005 ablaze by winning the Victoria Formula Ford Championships as well as the Victorian Rookie of the Year title. In the NSW Formula Ford Championships, he came second and took his second Rookie of the Year title. He had a sensational year in qualifying with 9 pole positions from 13 qualifying sessions.
After being the proud recipient of the CAMS Rising Star award, Martin was part of the National Formula Ford series in 2006.
Handed with a Spectrum011 by Borland Racing, Martin raced the Fiesta powered engine to a win at the opening round at the street circuit in Adelaide. Martin took off with a number of race wins and podium finishes. Another Rookie of the Year title stood on his shelf after another great season.
2006 was not just about his Rookie of the Year title and Martin was extremely strong as a title contender through the year. With just the final race of the season remaining, Martin needed a win to clinch the title and a win at final round of the final race of the season won him the 2006 Australian Formula Ford championships. He decided to move to England and take part in the British Formula Ford Championship.
He won his first race at Brands Hatch and became the first Aussie to win on debut. This win opened up opportunities at an international level in 2007. He was part of the 2008 International class of British Formula3 in the Raikkonen Roberston Racing team. In 2008-09, Martin will treat the audiences to his driving skills at the A1 GP in the new season, for team Australia.
