Matt Halliday has been crazy about racing since the age of 7. At the age of 15, he won the New Zealand Junior Championships in the Junior Light and the National levels. In 1997, Matt got hold of a Formula ford and in 1998, he ran his first full season and came fourth in the overall standings. He then moved into the Australian Formula Holden Championships and had a sensational season. With the Ralt Australia team, he finished on the podium a number of times and also came second at the Adelaide 500 meeting.
In 2001, Matt came over to the United States and was part of the 2001 USA Indy Lights Championships. He missed the first three rounds of the season but despite a poor start, he finished every single race and came sixth in the overall championship standings, fourth in the Rookie of the Year standings. In 2003, Matt came into his own, after a successful drive in some local Porsche GT3 races. In the inaugural Formula Renault V6 Eurocup Series, Halliday signed on for a drive and had a wonderful season. At Monaco, Matt qualified in pole position and went on to lead 23 laps of the race before a transmission problem forced him to slow down and lumber on slowly to second place. Despite poor luck he was strong throughout the season and in the summer of 2004-05, he was back at the Porsche GT3 Championship series where, after a hotly contested season, he came second in the final standings.
