In his 25 years long career, Bobby Allison won the series championship in 1983 and was runner-up in the championship five times. One of the founding members of the Alabama Gang, Allison, went on to win 84 NASCAR Cup Series races, 57 pole positions and 446 top-10 finishes. He further won the Daytona 500 in 1978, 1982 and 1988, while his son, the late Davey Allison, finished right behind, attaining second place in the 1988 event.

Allison was only behind Richard Petty, in terms of number races led, numbering to 414 and was ranked fourth all-time for 718 career starts, at his retirement. Allison also won the NASCAR's Most Popular Driver award in 1971-73, and 1981-83.

In 1988, due to injuries sustained from an accident, Allison was forced to retire from NASCAR racing, but was honored with an induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame as well as the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame in 1993, and the next year he was inducted into the Eastern Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame.
