With 200 NASCAR Cup Series race wins, Richard Petty was the undisputed leader of stock-car racing, and his seven championship wins, in his 35 year career only support that fact. Making NASCAR history, Petty won 27 out of 48 races out of which, he won 10 in a row. Furthermore, Petty finished in second place seven times, while pursuing the 1967 title. In the 1967 season Petty had the most number of races led, numbering to 41, out of 48 and he also topped the number of laps led, numbering to 5,537, out of 12,730 laps.

Out of the 200 wins, Petty had seven in the Daytona 500 and he also bagged a win in the Firecracker 400, at Daytona International Speedway, on 4th of July, 1984. In NASCAR all-time categories, Petty tops many categories, such as all-time race wins, 200, number of top-five finishes, 555, number of races started, 1184, number of races led, 599, number of pole positions, 126, number of laps completed, 307,836, number of consecutive races won, 10 and finally number of top-10 finishes, 712.

Living up to the legacy of his father, Lee Petty, who himself is a three time championship winner, Richard Petty retired from racing in 1992 and completed the entire season. In the same year he was inducted into Lowe's Motor Speedway's Court of Legends and another five years later another induction followed, this time into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, in Talladega, Alabama.
