Robert "Bob" Joe Welborn, in his 13 years of racing, accumulated nine wins, seven pole positions, an impressive 102 top-10 finishes and 58 top-5 finishes. A passionate and talented driver, in the 1955 season, Welborn finished fourth in NASCAR Cup Series standings. But his first win was two years later at the Martinsville Speedway, in 1957. At the race, even though the win was recorded to Welborn, he did not cross the finish line with the car. Lewis "Possum" Jones took over from Welborn at the mid-way point of the race, even though Welborn was credited for it.

In 1958, Welborn won five races, and recorded the most number of wins in a single season, in his NASCAR racing career. His most commendable achievement was the three consecutive wins of the final three NASCAR Convertible championships, from 1955 till 1957. His last NASCAR start was in the year 1964, and on August, 1997 Bob Welborn passed away, leaving a significant career behind.

To honor this talented driver, Welborn was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame, at Darlington Raceway, in 1982.
