Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has celebrated making history by following in the footsteps of his father and winning the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.
Rosberg won Sunday’s GP in Monte Carlo 30 years after his father Keke, making the pair the first ever father-son combination to win in the principality.
The German won ahead of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, who extended the lead at the top of the Formula One standings to 21 points from Kimi Raikkonen who finished back in 10th.
Mark Webber was third in his Red Bull, followed by Lewis Hamilton, while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso came in seventh in a race which had three restarts after crashes.
However, for Rosberg, who was on pole position for the third straight race, it was a flawless weekend.
“The whole weekend went perfectly,” said Rosberg. “I had a terrible start, and it was close with Sebastian and Lewis, but other than that, it worked out well.
“I was able to control the pace, and the car was really good. The tires held on okay, and that was really the key to the victory today. So a massive thanks to the team. I’m just ecstatic.”
Meanwhile, Vettel said: “Overall, I’m very happy and pleased with the result.
“We all know it’s very difficult to overtake here. Congratulations to Nico. He did a very good job. It was a very controlled race, and he had the pace and the tires. It was a fantastic start to the race, but there was no room.
“I thought I could have driven past both Mercedes, but I didn’t have the room and had to lift.”
