Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel is dreaming of retaining his title again after claiming victory at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, gaining 10 points on series leader Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard finished third at the Marina Bay night track, while McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was the unlucky driver of the evening, having started on pole and enjoyed the lead before gearbox failure forced him out of the race.

Red Bull’s Vettel went on to take victory ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button and Alonso, while Lotus’ title contenders Kimi Raikkonen lost ground back in sixth, while Mark Webber was way down in 11th.

Vettel’s triumph moves him to 165 points, just 29 behind Alonso, while Raikkonen loses ground back to 149.

“(The championship) looks better than before,” Vettel told reporters. “Fernando finished third and it’s 10 points better than before.

“There are a lot of races left, and it’s difficult to predict what is going to happen but we have to make sure we finish the races.

“The pace is there and even if we are not quick enough to win - we have to make sure we do that. It is a tough championship so far but we are still in it.”
