>2009 is looking to be the most exciting Formula One season for a long time as a level playing field ensures that there is more parity amongst the teams as, otherwise back-benchers are now coming forth and even winning races. The FIA has come in for a lot of criticism for the regulation changes brought into the sport but the Red Bull one-two finish today has been a wonderful consequence of that action.
Sebastian Vettel has tasted the top podium spot before, but that was in a Scuderia Toro Rosso. This time round, it was in another Red Bull Racing race car, a younger sister of Toro Rosso, that he crossed the finish line in first place again. The first win ever, for Red Bull F1 racing has been twice as sweet as Mark Webber completed to the top two positions in the second Red Bull race car.
Reliability woes have marred Red Bull in the past and they have only ever managed two podium finishes with David Coulthard in Monaco, 06 and Mark Webber in Hungary, 07. The new RB5 though, has been a revelation compared to the previous seasons and although there were a few technical issues that led to two sleepless nights for the Red Bull pit garage, in the end it was a sensational performance that saw them take the chequered flag.
“A great result for the team and Red Bull,” said team principal Christian Horner. “It’s testimony to all the effort and hard work that Red Bull and (owner) Mr. Mateschitz has committed to Formula One. I want to thank Red Bull and everyone in Milton Keynes, who have worked so hard for this.
“It’s just an unbelievable result. We’ve got a great car, a great team, great drivers, a single diffuser and we have a double one to come, so we’re looking good. The whole team and company can be very proud of this moment.” >
Vettel was exceptional in the driving rain and despite a bump at the back from former team-mate Sebastien Buemi, he was extremely grateful to his team.
“Winning my second race, one with Toro Rosso and one with Red Bull, makes me extremely happy and I hope we can continue working in this direction!” said the German. “I’m extremely proud and happy. I’m so happy to have won the race, it was an enormous and great job by the whole of Red Bull. I want to say a massive thank you to them all, everyone has worked so hard, so thanks to the team and also to Red Bull.”
The battle for second place led to Webber running wide, effectively killing his chances of winning the race. Going past Jenson Button after sliding off is considered as one of the best moves in his career. The Aussie was delighted with the result.
“It’s incredible to get the cars home and to get maximum points,” he said. “This comes after the near misses in Australia for Sebastian and for myself in Malaysia. It’s a great day for the team in Milton Keynes, well done and thank you to them, and also to everyone in Austria.”
Red Bull have jumped into second place in the standings after their win, 16.5 points behind Brawn GP who had Button come in at third place. They lead Toyota by one point.
