Mercedes' George Russell converted his Pole position into victory in the first F1 Sprint at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, despite locking wheels with teammate Kimi Antonelli in a fierce fight for the lead on Saturday.
The fifth round of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Canadian GP, saw its inaugural F1 Sprint Poleman, Mercedes' George Russell, leading all 23 laps to surge victorious on Saturday.
The 28-year-old driver secured the maximum points awarded to the winner (8), with the McLaren of reigning champion Lando Norris gaining a position to finish in second place, followed by the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli in third at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri finished fourth, grabbing additional points for the Papaya outfit.
Scuderia Ferrari took the checkered flag in P5 with Charles Leclerc and P6 with Lewis Hamilton, who clipped the Wall of Champions in the last stages of the race, losing pace to Piastri and Leclerc.
Teammates in the Spotlight
Antonelli held position as the lights went out from second place, beginning a close battle for the lead with his teammate, the protagonists of a controversial clash.
The 19-year-old attempted to overtake the British driver on Lap 6, but his efforts did not pay dividends as they locked wheels.
The Italian attempted to go around the corner at Turn 1, running onto the grass and squeezing back into the circuit. Eventually, he would drop a position to Norris, remaining in contention.
In the cockpit, frustration took over the championship leader, who let it all out on the radio. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff intervened, instructing the Italian to “Concentrate on the driving, please, and not on the radio moaning.”
A tense atmosphere would build from there to the post-race media press conference, both speaking about the incident but barely looking at each other.
Furthermore, four-time world champion Max Verstappen and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindbland secured the last points available in P7 and P8, respectively.
At 4 p.m. local time, the focus shifts to Qualifying for Sunday's Grand Prix with everything to play for.
