A statement issued by Audi Revolut F1 Team confirmed on Friday the departure of Jonathan Wheatley from his role of Team Principal with immediate effect, due to personal reasons.
"The team thanks Jonathan for his contribution to the project and wishes him the best for his future endeavours," reads the official statement.
Audi F1 Team has made a solid start to its inaugural season at the pinnacle of motorsport with Jonathan Wheatley at the helm.
The 58-year-old motorsport executive stepped into his role as Team Principal on April 1, 2025, having worked in Formula 1 since 1991.
Following his departure, Mattia Binotto, Head of Audi F1 Project, will continue to act in his original role, taking on additional responsibilities as the new team boss.
Binotto, 56, joined the project in 2024, bringing 27 years of experience and knowledge in Formula One, having built a solid career with Ferrari, spanning from 1995 to 2022.
"The team's future structure will be fully defined at a later stage, as the organisation continues to adapt to the evolving environment of Formula One. With the unwavering commitment of AUDI AG, Audi Revolut F1 Team will continue progressing towards challenging for championships by 2030," the press release concludes.
In 2022, the automaker, part of the Volkswagen Group, confirmed its entry at the pinnacle of motorsport from the 2026 season, having established a strategic partnership with Sauber by acquiring a minority shareholding in the Swiss Group.
The Hinwil-based company would be responsible for developing and manufacturing the race car at its headquarters in Switzerland, as well as planning and executing race operations.
Meanwhile, the Audi Motorsport Competence Center in Neuburg took over the task of building the powertrain, becoming the first automaker to build an F1 power unit in Germany in more than a decade.
Eventually, Audi AG acquired 100 percent of the Group, resulting in its transition into the Audi F1 factory team.
With the first two races in the rear mirror, Audi stands eighth in the Constructors' Championship with two points scored on debut at the Australian Grand Prix at the hands of Gabriel Bortoleto.
Last weekend, teammate Nico Hulkergerg came close to scoring his first point with the squad as he finished the Chinese GP in 11th place.
