Submission is a term used in combat sports and Mixed Martial Arts, which is described to yielding the opponent to give up the fight. The term “Submission” can also be described as “Tapping Out”, where the opponent is lying on the floor or being strangled by the attacker. When the opponent can’t take the pressure or is ready to discontinue the game, he would say the word “Tap” so the referee can stop the fight. Hence, the attacker shall be declared as the winner of the match.

What is Technical Submission?

A Technical Submission is a type of submission that happens when the referee stopped the fight because of serious injury. In Mixed Martial Arts, many techniques are not allowed if it causes headbutts and other dangerous injuries. For example, if the fighter is already unconscious and can’t fight anymore, the referee should declare the attacker as the winner. Situations where the opponent’s life is threatened, the referee will be forced to stop the fight. This match will result in a technical knockout or technical submission, depending on the match rules and regulations.

Submission Hold

Submission Hold is often used in combat sports when the attacker needed to grapple or hold down the opponent to the ground by forcefully pinning him. This will lead the opponent to surrender due to extreme pain and injury. Submissions can be featured in sports, like Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Mixed Martial Arts. Many skilled players are using Submission as a psychological weapon against their opponents to intimidate them, yet some of them are using this technique to cause bone dislocation and fractures to their opponents.

The Safeword to Stop the Match

To stop a fight when the fighter is already hurting, the safeword would be “Tap” or any code word given at the match. The main purpose of the safe word is to avoid serious injuries. For example, in Judo, the safe word would be “Matte,” which means to wait. Other sports that use safe words are rugby and professional wrestling because these sports are strenuous and physical. If the players utter the safe word, then the attacker will be forced to stop his actions towards the opponent.
