He turned pro in November 2006. His first professional fight was against Dan Gregory for Midwest Championship Fighting. Before he joined the World Extreme Cagefighting, he fought for Victory Fighting Championship, MFC, Battlequest, and UCE.

He fought WEC for the first time in January 2009. He went up against Anthony Njokuani, Shane Roller, Donald Cerrone, and Jamie Varner. He also fought against Anthony Pettis. He lost that fight.

His first UFC fight was against Mark Bocek in April 2011. He went undefeated in the UFC until he lost in August 2013 to Pettis. He continued to fight in the UFC until 2015. His last UFC fight was against Jorge Masvidal.

In August 2016, he fought in Bellator, losing to Andrey Koreshkov. He continued to fight for Bellator through 2022. Some of his opponents include Saad Award, Roger Huerta, Myles Jury, and Peter Queally.
