Let’s start at the top. A knockout is the most easily observable and self-explanatory outcome where the losing fighter is literally knocked out of the fight and is unable to continue. This is usually the case after a fighter takes numerous heavy blows to the head which causes the fighter to lose consciousness and pass-out, making the referee stop the fight for the sake of the fighter’s health. For daily fantasy UFC, a knockout will garner you the most fantasy UFC points.
Next is the technical knockout/submission. These two usually go hand in hand because they are in a category of their own. A technical knockout is slightly different from the traditional knockout because the referee is the one to deem that a fighter cannot continue the fight for health reasons. This is usually the result of multiple body blows to a fighter or a heavy laceration that causes the fighter to be too bloody to continue to fight. A submission is solely done in the octagon. This feat is done when the two fighters are working each other in the ground (called grappling). Once a fighter gets in the position he is looking for, he may look to deploy a move such as a “armbar” or a “rear naked chokehold”. These moves are used to inflict as much pain as possible on the fighter’s opponent forcing them to literally “tap out” and forfeit from the match in fear of breaking a body part or losing consciousness.
Last, is a win by decision. In the MMA, rarely do we see a fight end in this manner because either of the conclusions previously discussed are more likely to ensure. So, if the two fighters are able to last for the entire duration of a fight, five rounds for five minutes each. If both fighters are still standing after this, a panel of judges deliberate which fighter performed better based on a variety of different criteria that they deem is valuable. The panel usually includes five judges who look at statistics such as: Punches landed, number of submissions, etc.
