Weekes was drafted by the Florida Panthers in 1993, and joined the team in 1997. He was traded to Vancouver in 1998, and again to the New York Islanders in 1999. He spent another two seasons in Tampa Bay before being traded to Carolina, where he helped them reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002. He signed with the New York Rangers in 2004, but did not start with them until 2005, after the lockout. He lost his starting job to the upstart Henrik Lundqvist. In 2007, he signed with the New Jersey Devils. Weekes is one of a small number of black players in the NHL today.
