In 2008-09, Rick Nash and the Blue Jackets made their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Unfortunately for them, they were seeded against the Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings, and were bounced from the playoffs in a quick series sweep. However, the Blue Jackets’ success is definitely something to build on, as they will return to next season with most of last year’s roster intact, as well as the return of Derrick Brassard, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury.Brassard returning>

The Blue Jackets clearly have their starting goalie in Steve Mason, the rookie phenom who seemed nearly unbeatable all season long. Mathieu Garon was added to compete with Dan LaCosta for the backup job, hopefully giving Columbus some more reliable backups than they had last season. Columbus went 6-11 in games that LaCosta or Mason didn’t earn the decision in during the 2008-09 season, with only Fredrik Norrena posting a GAA of less than 3.50. With Mason able to have some breathing room, he might be better rested for a second shot at the playoffs next season.

Up front, the Blue Jackets took care of a potential major distraction for next year by inking superstar Rick Nash to an 8 year deal. Nash certainly earned every dollar he will be paid with his loyalty to the club through all its troubles in past seasons, and will hopefully be able to lead the franchise into future successes. Samuel Pahlsson should be a nice addition, as he has excellent ability to play both ends of the ice, while still remaining a productive asset on offense.
