Toronto Maple Leafs (14-15-6, 34 pts): Toronto fans were bracing themselves for this type of season after watching their team be slowly stripped apart over the offseason. Unfortunately, this poor performing Leafs squad didn’t get the memo that they were supposed to be number one contenders for the top draft pick next season. While a porous defense and inconsistent goaltending is at the root of most of their problems, the Leafs have somehow scored 110 goals so far this season, good for the 8th best offense in the league. >
The development of young winger Matt Stajan appears to be nearly complete, as the young winger who has been one of the Leafs’ top prospects for the past few seasons, is currently their top scorer (9-21-30). Familiar faces Nik Antropov (13-16-29) and Alexei Ponikarovsky (11-15-26) have emerged as some of the top offensive performers on the team in the wake of Mats Sundin’s departure. Newcomers Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski (12-9-21) have both been pleasant surprises and have helped provide some offensive spark.
Defensively, the Leafs have been less than stellar, as only six players on the current active roster have a positive plus/minus rating. Veterans Tomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina have been solid, while rookie Luke Schenn has been a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, starting goalie Vesa Toskala has been very inconsistent, posting a 3.32 GAA and .881 save percentage, while winning 13 of 31 starts. While the Leafs have been better than expected, they are still a long way off from being anywhere near a playoff spot.
