Don't Give the Hole Away

“Don’t Give the Hole Away” is an instruction that is given to a player because it indicates that they are aiming a putter towards the edge of the cup. The command is directed to aiming your putt. There are putts that are breaking to the right or left and when one is describing the aim line. The aim line refers to the side of the cup or hole.

Other Alternatives to the Expression

  • Right Edge
  • Inside Right Edge
  • Center of the Cup
  • Half a Cup Outside Left
  • Half a Ball Outside
  • Two Feet Right

If the put breaks away a bit and aimed outside at the edge of the cup, there is a saying called “don’t give up on the cup”. It is the same as “don’t give the hole away” If a put is breaking a little from left or right, it is possible to say something like

  • It breaks to the right, so don’t
give up the hole.
  • Right edge but don’t give up the
hole.

Taking a Break

Don’t give the hole away is often misconstrued as taking a break. However, it is not too much to aim outside of the hole. Some times this kind of action is hard to read. By not giving up on the cup, the putt will fall away from the hole. The aim is targeted at both right and left edge.
