In golf, the term BIGGA is an acronym for British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. Officially formed in January 1, 1987, BIGGA represents the interests of greenkeepers and to provide support for the greenkeeping profession. When the association was formed they have 1,200 members. Now, BIGGA has over 6,000 members from 31 different countries.
Understanding BIGGA
BIGGA is an association for greenkeepers. Greenkeepers are skilled professional whose main responsibility is to ensure good quality surface, do maintenance, and take charge of the proper care and overall appearance of the golf course. They also make sure that the course is consistent with its challenges and provides enjoyable experience for golfers. With these responsibilities, greenkeepers need the necessary support, education, and advice, hence, the creation of BIGGA.
Origin of BIGGA
In 1987 there was a merger of the top three greenkeepers association, the British Golf Greenkeepers Association, The English and International Golf Greenkeepers Association and The Scottish and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. The first chairman of this newly formed organization is Walter Woods BEM. BIGGA plays a significant role in golf and is elemental to the individuals working in this industry.
Benefits of BIGGA
Being a member of BIGGA does not only include support and advice. It also provide various benefits that a member can obtain. These benefits include a lower cost of education materials related to BIGGA, clothing discounts, and provides insurance. As a member of BIGGA, a greenkeeper is privilege to join the training courses that is related to the greenkeeping profession, attend Harrogate Week, and has the opportunity to be part of the monthly magazine that is published.
Membership Levels of BIGGA
To be part of BIGGA there are various membership levels that a greenkeeper can obtain. The full membership level are offered to employed greenkeepers assigned to maintain the sports turf in a sports facility. For the associate membership level, employed greenkeepers assigned to maintain the sports turf but does not have the NVQ/SVQ qualification or a working experience of at least three years. To those that are studying for the greenkeeping profession, they are offered the student membership. Affiliate membership levels are given to individuals that are not employed as a greenkeeper, but shows interest in the subject, particularly manufacturing of golf equipment. Lastly, the gold or silver key membership levels are for companies or businesses that wish to support the greenkeepers’ learning and development.
