Thomas Detry was born on January 13, 1993, in Uccle, Belgium, just south of Brussels. He started playing golf when he was just 5 years old. In addition to golf, he also enjoys playing tennis and hockey. He attended the Topsportschool Vlaanderen. As a junior’s player, he played in and won the Dutch Junior Open in 2009. He was 16 years old at the time.
He attended the University of Illinois and played collegiate golf for the university. He turned pro in 2016.
Career
As an amateur player, he represented Belgium at the European Boys’ Team Championship in 2010. He also was part of the Junior Ryder Cup. He also represented his country at the Eisenhower Trophy for the first time in 2010. He was only 17 at the time. From 2012 to 2016, he attended and played college golf for the University of Illinois. He was following his friend and fellow golfer Thomas Pieters.
In 2013 and 2014, he was named the Best Belgian Amateur Golfer. He also reached an amateur career-high ranking of No.5.
He started playing for the Challenge Tour in 2016 after he turned pro. That year, he won the Bridgestone Challenge. In 2017, he won the 2018 World Cup of Golf. In 2020, he finished runner-up at the Hero Open and the Celtic Classic. After these runner-up finishes, he advanced to the top 75 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
