Niclas Fasth turned professional in 1993 and in the same year, he won three events in the Challenge Tour as well as the Swedish professional Championship title. He has played in the European Tour since 1994 and earned a spot at the PGA Tour via the Qualifying School in 1997. He played on the PGA Tour and the European Tours simultaneously in 1998 and has represented Sweden in the World Golf Championship from 2001 to 2005, except in 2004.

He did not play in the 1999 European Tour and was relegated to play in the Challenge Tour but won the Daewoo Warsaw Golf Open. He also did not play in the US PGA Tour the following year until 2001 and focused only on the European Tour earning him the Madeira Island Open in 2000. By the next year, he was tenth in the 2001 European Order of Merit.

He earned a Tour card in 2001 and was runner up on the Open Championship which qualified him for a spot on the 2002 Ryder Cup. He continued playing in the Tour placing a T37 finish at the US Open and T28 at the Open Championship. He entered a Top 10 finish in the 2003 PGA Championship and placed a disappointing T45 finish in the 2004 PGA Championship.

2007 was a strong year for Verplank, earning a 4th place finish at the US Open and a win at the BMW International Open. He also placed T6 at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship and T9 at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match lay Championship as well as a win at the Royal Trophy representing Europe. His 2008 season started with a T39 finish at the Masters Tournament.
