Poulter started playing golf at the age of four. He is brothers with Danny Poulter, who is also a professional golfer. He used to work at the Chesfield Downs and Golf Club. He is married to Katie Poulter. He is known for his car collection, which includes a number of Ferraris.

Career

He turned pro in 1996. He won his first professional tournament in 1999 at the Open de Cote d’Ivoire. He beat Sébastien Delagrange, David Park, and Marc Pendaries by two strokes, winning four under par. His first European Tour win came in 2000. Poulter won the Italian Open by one stroke against Gordon Brand Jr..

In 2004, he won his first Tour Championship, the Volvo Masters Andalucia. He won with 7 under par, beating Sergio Garcia in the playoff. He made it to another Championship playoff in 2010, the Dubai World Championship where he lost to Robert Karlsson.

In 2008, he made it to second place in The Open Championship. In 2010, he won his first PGA Tour championship, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
