His father was from Leeds, England who immigrated to Australia as a young man. He and his wife, Sandy, have two children, Harry Jack (born in 1999) and Lily Bella (born in 2002).
Allenby turned pro in 1992 and became successful in reaching the top of the PGA Tour of Australasia. While on the European Tour, he won four tournaments (three in 1996).
He first earned his exempt status for 1999 by managing to finish 17th at the 1998 Qualifying School. However, he had a rather disappointing experience during his first season in America as he was only 126th on the money list. Things changed in 2000 when he won the Shell Houston Open as well as the Advil Western Open. He then went on to win another pair events the following season. In those two years, he reached 16th place on the money list. Since then, he has not won an event, but has managed to finish on the Top 50 every year from 2002 to 2004.
His performances in the major championships have been a bit disappointing. However, he did manage to reach his highest placing in a major event, landing in T7 place at the 2004 U.S. Open. He has been a part of the International Team in the President’s Cup for 1994, 1996, 2000, and 2003.In 2009, Allenby was noted in history of golf as the first ever Australian to be victorious at the Nedbank Golf Challenge that was held in South Africa.
