22-year old Anna Nordqvist won the LPGA Tour championship on Monday with a final round 65 to finish at 13 under par, with Lorena Ochoa just two strokes back. Nordqvist and Shin had played right behind Ochoa in the final group at the Houstonian Golf and Country Club.
This is Nordqvist’s second career victory without missing a cut in all of her 15 starts. She surged to the win with 12 under with five consecutive birdies and made a bogey at the 13th. Birdies on 14 and 15 clinched the tournament for Nordqvist, while Ochoa and Shin were left to battle it out for the spot behind her. Ochoa took the spot when Shin missed the 18th hole by a few inches.
“I’m happy I can make history, and my goal is to continue that. Hopefully, I’m going to get back home and work hard and be ready for next year.” Ochoa, who won her fourth straight Vare Trophy is also getting married in two weeks.
“I definitely tried to be aggressive,” Nordqvist said. “It was pretty tight up the leaderboard, so you were really going to have to shoot low in order to pull it off. I’m just very, very happy that I did.”
