The prize is £3 Million, and the way to win it – is a nine-iron on the third extra hole.
Fitzpatrick had finished in the number 10 spot at the Masters but he feared he would miss the cut to play on his “second-favorite course”, in Georgia as the event featured 21 of the Top 25 golfers in the world.
The venue, Harbour Town, was where Fitzpatrick’s parents took him as a six-year-old.
“I was telling Billy [Foster, his caddie] that it does not get better than this,” Fitzpatrick said.
“I came here as a kid with my folks and my brother and I just fantasized about one day playing here in a big competition. It shows me how far I’ve come.”
He now rises to number in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Going into the playoffs, many fans were pegging the win on Spieth. But Fitzpatrick birdied in the 15th and 16th and drew level on 17-under.
“Matt played tremendous golf coming in,” Spieth said. “I had a couple of putts to win that play-off and don’t know how the one on the first playoff hole didn’t go in.
“I think if I hit the same putt 10 times, it goes in eight times. It just wasn’t meant to be. Matt was great.”
