He beat out John Spieth and Phil Mickelson to win. This is the first time since 2017 that a Spanish player won the title at Augusta National. It also falls on the 40th anniversary of Rahms hero Seve Ballesteros and what would have been Ballesteros 66th birthday.
Its incredibly meaningful, Rahm said. Im at a loss for words.
He joins three other Spanish players who now have green jackets, the other ones being Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Sergio Garcia.
The tournament started with Brooks Koepka holding a four-shot advantage. The events were delayed due to the bad weather on Friday and Saturday.
I just kind of played average, Koepka said. Theres some days you have it, and some days you dont. Today just wasnt one of those. I feel good and expect to be there in the other three [majors].
Rahm held on to his momentum throughout the tournament and by the time he was on Hole 18, his lead had been extended to four. In the home hole, he was able to save par.
It was a Seve par, Rahm said. In a not purposeful way, it was a testament to him. I know he was pulling for me today. It was a great Sunday.
After his final putt, he raised his arms and buried his head in his hands.
