Golfers Bubba Watson and Bryson DeChambeau Opposed to Alter Golf Balls and Restrict Distances

Bubba Watson and Bryson DeChambeau have recently spoken out against the USGA and R&A’s proposed plan to limit the distance of golf balls by introducing modified ones.

The proposed plan involves forcing professional golfers to use modified golf balls that conform to a maximum distance of 320 yards on carry and roll, reducing driver distance by about 15 yards. The USGA and R&A believe that the sport’s spans are increasing by approximately one yard per year off the tee, and this plan would keep the game sustainable in the coming decades.

However, Watson disagrees, saying that “the sport is at an all-time high, so let’s don’t mess with it. Let’s just keep it growing.” DeChambeau, who is known for being one of the longest hitters in the sport, said that the plan is “the most atrocious thing that you could possibly do to the game of golf.”

While he understands the logic on paper, DeChambeau believes the plan is about something other than rolling golf balls back but making golf courses more challenging. He argues that everyone wants to see people hit the ball farther, which is part of why some people like what he does and others don’t.

While the USGA and R&A believe that introducing modified golf balls will keep the game sustainable in the coming decades, Watson, DeChambeau, and Thomas argue that the plan would harm the sport. As the debate continues, golf enthusiasts will watch closely how this proposal progresses.
