November 9, SHANGHAI, China – It’s a double win for Spanish hunk Sergio Garcia as he successfully teed off Monday for two distinguished prizes: the HSBC Championship and the second spot in the world rankings. By beating HSBC Champions rival Oliver Wilson with a birdie on the second hole, the towering Spanish golfer earned his spot as second best golfer in the world, right behind Tiger Woods. He won $833,300.00.
Garcia is happy that he has had a steady stream of wins as the year comes to a close. “It’s a great week. The last seven months have been very, very positive since my win at The Players,” he said. These victories include the PGA Championship, the Players Championship, the Castellon Masters, and some other events. “It’s been a very solid year,” he added.
The HSBC playoff was delayed by rain and time, as the steady downpour and darkness forced the players to pack up their golf clubs. The golf stars had to endure the long stretch of the game from Friday well into Sunday. This however, did not bother Garcia the least bit. “You have to deal with it,” the HSBC Champion said. “You can’t do anything about it so you just stay patient.”
Apparently, this kind of patience earned him the no. 2 spot in the world rankings, nudging Phil Mickelson downward to the No. 3 spot.
