What Makes the Yankees So Great?

I don't know the current team all that well in all honesty, but they have an immense history. Two names spring to mind; Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig. Two of the greatest players in baseball, ever, played for them.

A large part of who the Yankees are has to do with their long and successful history, with many successful and standout players. You had your Babe Ruth's and Mickey Mantle's who really caught the attention of fans and non-fans alike. Even now, the Yankees have many solid players. The difference is the motivations have changed from love of the game, to money grubbing.

The Yankees have had many dynasties over the ages. Their last dynasty was comprised of role players like Bernie Williams, Constatino Martinez, Jim Leyritz, Paul O'Neil and Andy Pettitte. The team in 2005 had too many All Stars and free agent signings. They need to go back to the farm system like the 2007 Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers.

Sometimes I cannot help but feel that the best days for the Yankees have long since past. Not that I think their successes have ended, but I can't help but boo sometimes... seeing all those high-paid players going out there, with people thinking they are the worlds best and stuff. The worlds best should be motivated by more than money.
