That is Mathew Hayden's reason for coming out of retirement and playing in the T20 event. It seems a lot of cricket players have trouble staying retired.
Well sure, if you love the game; that is a great reason to keep playing or to come back. Plus, I would imagine that a love for the money you get when you play, has something to do with it. ;)
You have to recognize that Hayden was considered one of the most intimidating openers in cricket and after his departure in January we saw the effect on the team. I think a lot of it had to do with the foot injuries and him never really giving himself the time to heal properly. Thus never really getting back to his potential. I am glad to see him back and with the performance in May and so far in June I am sure I am not alone.
Intimidating was definitely the word to use for Hayden and I also am glad to see him back. Hopefully he has had time now to completely heal from his past injuries. He definitely seems to be getting his game back.
Now that the T20 is over, Michael seems to be drifting back into retirement. He is still quick to offer advice and support to younger, less experienced players.
So many cricket players don't actually retire that this isn't a surprise when it happens. Most end up still playing locally, for their county, or coaching. It means that its just a small hop back up-they are still in shape.
The money really must be hard to leave behind. I doubt that these guys are short a penny or two by the time that they retire, but it still must be an attraction.
