Ganguly has played his career as a left handed player. He's good, there's no doubt, but do you think being left handed has given him an advantage?

Possibly, but only because he is approaching the other players at an angle that they may not be fully comfortable with unless they are used to playing left-handed players.

I can potentially see a left hander being able to take out players not used to a left hander, simply because they could spin the ball differently for instance. I would think though that studying the guy's past matches could help to reduce that advantage.

Isn't it also an issue for baseball players who are not used to a left handed bowler? (not even sure its bowler for baseball but you know what I mean.)

Yes, it presents problems there too. A left hander is sometimes viewed as a real asset to the team, and with good reason.

I always thought that leftys ended up writing neater than rightys due to the angle, so that does make sense when you would be playing a sport too.

I thought that the opposite was true-that writing is a problem because they smudge their writing, they are moving towards it always or have to slope in such a way as to avoid it.

That depends. I have seen some leftys that have impeccable hand writing that can easily put mine to shame. Most that I know end up holding most of their hand higher than us rightys do, but thats still gotta be tiresome. I could not imagine the difference in sports.
