In American football, the term “throwaway” often refers to a quarterback throwing the football away when there is no one to safely throw the ball to. When the tight ends and the wide receivers are too near the defenders, the quarterback may choose to throw the ball to no one in particular at the risk of being called with an intentional grounding penalty.
