Tony Gonzalez is an American former professional football player who spent 17 seasons as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) with Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons.

He holds the NFL records for the most career receiving yards and receptions by a tight end.

Player Profile, High School, and College Career

Anthony David Gonzalez was born on February 27, 1976, in Torrance, California, United States. The Tight End stands 196 cm tall, and his playing weight was listed at 112 kg.

He attended Huntington Beach High School in California, where he was a phenomenal two-sport athlete in football and basketball. Following his senior year, he was named the Orange County High School Athlete of the Year, notably beating out future golf legend Tiger Woods for the honor.

He chose to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where he continued to play both football and basketball for the Golden Bears from 1994 to 1996. On the gridiron, he was a Consensus All-American and First-team All-Pac-10 selection in 1996.

On the hardwood, he was a key contributor who helped lead Cal's basketball team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.

Professional Career

Gonzalez was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round (13th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft. He immediately established himself as a premier pass-catching threat, paving the way for the modern, athletic tight end.

During his 12 seasons with the Chiefs (1997–2008) and his final five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2009–2013), Gonzalez was the definition of consistency and durability. Over his 17-year career, he missed only two regular-season games, appearing in 270 of 272 possible contests. He possessed incredibly sure hands, famously losing only two fumbles out of 1,327 career touches.

He earned 14 Pro Bowl selections and six First-team All-Pro honors—both of which stand as records for the tight end position.

When he retired following the 2013 season, he held the all-time tight end records for career receiving yards (15,127) and receptions (1,325), and ranked second in receiving touchdowns (111). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019 in his first year of eligibility.

Retirement

Off the field, Gonzalez is known for his strict dedication to health, fitness, and nutrition, which contributed greatly to his football longevity. He briefly stepped back onto the basketball court during the 2002 NFL offseason, playing in the NBA Summer League for the Miami Heat.

Since retiring from the NFL, Gonzalez has transitioned into a highly successful career as a television sports analyst. He has worked as an NFL studio analyst for CBS Sports and Fox Sports, and currently serves as an analyst for Amazon Prime Video's Thursday Night Football.

He has also dabbled in acting, appearing in the movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and hosts a health and wellness podcast called Wide Open with Tony Gonzalez.
