James Ferentz is a former American professional football center and current coach in the National Football League (NFL). A two-time Super Bowl champion as a player, he transitioned into coaching following his retirement in early 2024. He currently serves as the tight ends coach for the Houston Texans.

He attended Iowa City High School in his hometown, where he was a standout offensive lineman. Following high school, he played college football for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes from 2008 to 2012, playing under his father, long-time head coach Kirk Ferentz. During his collegiate career, he started his final 38 games at center and earned Second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2012.

Personal Life

His father, Kirk Ferentz, is the winningest head coach in University of Iowa history, and his brother, Brian Ferentz, has also served in high-level coaching positions in both college and the NFL.

Professional Career

Ferentz went undrafted during the 2014 NFL Draft and began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans. After spending his rookie year on the Texans' practice squad, he was claimed off waivers by the Denver Broncos in 2015. He appeared in 14 games during the 2015 season and earned his first championship ring when the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.

In 2017, Ferentz joined the New England Patriots, where he would spend the remainder of his playing career. He became a highly valued interior depth piece and a frequent presence on both the active roster and practice squad. He secured his second title in 2018 when the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Known for his veteran leadership and reliability, Ferentz started 10 games during his eight-year NFL career. He officially announced his retirement from professional football on February 19, 2024.

Coaching Career

Immediately following his retirement, Ferentz transitioned into the coaching ranks. He was hired as the assistant offensive line coach for the New York Giants in March 2024, serving in that role through the 2025 season. In January 2026, he returned to the franchise where he began his professional journey, signing as the tight ends coach for the Houston Texans to work under head coach DeMeco Ryans.
