Ike Boettger is an American professional football guard who enters the 2026 offseason framework as an experienced veteran free agent. He has played with the Buffalo Bills for 4 seasons and stayed with numerous teams in the National Football League (NFL).

Player Profile, High School, and College Career

Isaac "Ike" Boettger was born on October 5, 1994, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, United States of America. The Guard stands 198 cm tall, and his playing weight was last listed at 142 kg.

He attended Cedar Falls High School in Iowa, where he put together one of the most uniquely versatile athletic profiles in the region. Boettger played tight end, wide receiver, quarterback, and defensive back, throwing for 750 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior before moving to tight end for his senior campaign. He also served as a team captain for both the football and basketball squads.

Lightly recruited because he weighed just 220 pounds at the time, he earned an opportunity with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Redshirting in 2013, Boettger underwent a massive physical transformation under Iowa's elite strength program, bulking up by nearly 100 pounds to transition permanently to the offensive line. He became an essential, physical anchor up front for the Hawkeyes from 2014 to 2017, starting 19 consecutive games at right tackle and left guard before an untimely Achilles injury cut his senior season short.

Professional Career

Boettger went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft but signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in May 2018.

He was waived at the end of training camp and briefly claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs, spending a week on their active roster before being waived again. The Bills immediately reclaimed him off the waiver wire, setting off a multi-year tenure where Boettger would grow from a practice squad development project into a vital piece of Buffalo's powerful offense.

He made his official NFL debut in December 2018 against the Miami Dolphins.

Boettger’s definitive professional breakthrough arrived during the 2020 season, when he stepped into the starting left guard spot following an injury to Jon Feliciano and started seven games, providing clean pocket protection during the Bills' deep run to the AFC Championship Game.

He retained his momentum into 2021, starting an additional 10 games at left guard. However, adversity struck in Week 16 against the New England Patriots, where he suffered a devastating torn Achilles tendon that ended his season.

Boettger re-signed with Buffalo on consecutive one-year deals through the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, grinding through a grueling year-long rehabilitation process to successfully make it back onto the field.

He spent the latter part of the 2023 season with the Indianapolis Colts, bouncing between their practice squad and active roster to provide veteran interior depth. He completed his most recent professional stints during the 2024 offseason program, spending training camp weeks reinforcing the trenches for both the Detroit Lions and the Carolina Panthers.
