Bruce Smith is an American former professional football player who played 19 seasons as a defensive end in the National Football League (NFL).

He was the anchor of the Buffalo Bills' defense during their unprecedented run to four consecutive Super Bowls in the early 1990s.

Player Profile, High School, and College Career

Bruce Bernard Smith was born on June 18, 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. The Defensive End stands 193 cm tall, and his playing weight was listed at 119 kg.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, where he earned All-State honors. He chose to stay in his home state to play college football for the Virginia Tech Hokies from 1981 to 1984. During his collegiate career, he earned the nickname "The Sack Man" for his astonishing ability to disrupt offenses, recording a school-record 46 sacks and 71 tackles for loss.

In 1984, he won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman and was named a Consensus All-American. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006, and Virginia Tech retired his number 78 jersey.

Professional Career

Smith was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the first overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft. He quickly developed into the most terrifying pass rusher of his era.

During his 15 seasons with the Bills (1985–1999), Smith was the cornerstone of the franchise. He recorded double-digit sacks in 13 seasons and won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award twice (1990 and 1996). With his rare blend of speed, power, and his signature "rip" move, he led the Bills' defense to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

He earned 11 Pro Bowl selections and eight First-team All-Pro honors during his storied tenure in Buffalo.

After leaving the Bills, Smith played his final four seasons with the Washington Redskins (2000–2003). In his final season at age 40, he achieved his ultimate individual goal by recording his 200th career sack, cementing his place as the NFL's all-time sack leader.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009 in his first year of eligibility, and the Buffalo Bills retired his number 78 jersey.

Retirement

Following his retirement from professional football in 2004, Smith transitioned into a highly successful career as a commercial real estate developer. He founded Bruce Smith Enterprise, a firm headquartered in Virginia Beach that specializes in developing premier mixed-use projects, hotels, and residential properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

He remains deeply involved in his home state's business and philanthropic communities.
