Steve Young is a retired professional American football player in the National Football League (NFL). He held the quarterback position for the Los Angeles Express from 1984 to 1985, Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1985 to 1986, and the San Francisco 49ers from 1987 to 1999. Young is a three-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP, and seven-time Pro Bowler.

Born on October 11, 1961 in Utah, he was the quarterback for the Greenwich High School football team. While he was a heavily-recruited player, he chose Brigham Young University where he received the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. In the 1984 Supplemental Draft of USFL and CFL players, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Young first.

During his rookie season, he had difficulties in performing with the team. On April 24, 1987, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. He served as the backup for Montana from 1987 to 1990. When Montano got injured in 1991, he became the starting quarterback but got sidelined with an injury of his own.

The 1992 season was Young’s breakout year as he was named the NFL Most Valuable Player. In 1993, he officially became the team’s starting quarterback as Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. Young became the sixth player to win the Super Bowl MVP and the NFL MVP honors in the same season. The performance of the team went into decline in the following years and Young suffered from concussions and injuries.

Young retired at the end of the 1999 season due to his injuries. His career player statistics are 33,124 passing yards, 96.8 passer rating, 232–107 touchdowns-interceptions, 4,239 rushing yards, and 43 rushing touchdowns. Young is a College Football Hall of Famer and a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
