As the NFL season approaches, certain story lines are developing that look to be important in 2008-2009. Here are my top three potential stories for this next year.
NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement
With the owners trashing the agreement with the players union, the floodgates have opened for lucrative contracts. That’s because without a collective bargaining agreement the salary cap is basically nonexistent. This has led to huge rookie contracts and some big multi-year extensions for top vets. It’s also caused the commissioner to voice concern, led some players to sit out until they get the big deal they believe they deserve and made it likely that many college juniors will forego their final year of eligibility in 2009 to cash-in on the loose money. This year, the NFL world may be topsy-turvy.
New England Patriots
If ever this team had something to prove, it’s this year. First, there’s the fact that the Pats were outplayed in last year’s Super Bowl, allowing the New York Giants to take the crown. Additionally, there are more than a few New England Patriots who will be motivated to ensure they not only make it to the 2008 Super Bowl but win it hands down. Tom Brady is certainly motivated. Randy Moss is also very motivated.
And then there’s Spygate, which has blemished coach Bill Belechick’s reputation. When Belechick has something to prove, he proves it. Watch out for these guys!
Big Money Guys
Whether it’s rookies Matt Ryan or Jake Long or vets Terrell Owens or Tommie Harris, fans, coaches and owners will be looking to their big money players to make big money plays. There will be a lot of blogging, water cooler talk and sports editorials about these high paid guys, especially if those who are being paid less do more for the team.
