He’s been retired a mere four months, but rumors are that future Hall of Fame quarterback and Green Bay Packers mainstay Brett Favre is feeling the call of the field once again. Lambeau Field that is.
It’s been reported by numerous sources that Favre has contacted Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy regarding his desire to attend the upcoming team training camp. However, Favre, who was reached by the Sun Herald in Mississippi on Wednesday, claimed that it was nothing but a rumor.
But Favre’s brother, Scott, said that Brett had been working out, and he felt that it was even money on the quarterback making an encore. He certainly won’t be the first sports superstar to make an about-face where retirement is concerned. One guy who has done it in the past is the NBA’s Michael Jordan.
Farve, who was placed on the injured-retired list after announcing that he was stepping down in March, has two years remaining on his contract. His salary for each year is around $12.5 million. At this point, because of his status, that money does not count towards the Green Bay Packers salary cap.
It would be interesting, in many ways, if Green Bay’s #4 did make a return. Remember that his locker was retired and the club plans to remove it and present it to him. Also, there are certainly questions regarding what his return would do to the mental make-up of the team. Finally, there is the concern about his stamina and regarding the amount of physical abuse he’s taken over the years.
