Sports Pundit reported last week that although wide receiver Plaxico Burress showed up for the Giants June minicamp, he decided to sit out all of the drills. The New York Giants were clearly irritated with his decision to not participate, but Burress, who caught the winning touchdown in last year’s Super Bowl, was making a point.
Burress’ behavior was geared towards making the Giants organization understand that he felt that he was underpaid. Recently, Burress told Philadelphia radio station WIP that he felt that he’d have a new deal before the team’s training camp gears up on July 25.
The wide receiver observed, “Honestly, I think my situation is going to be rectified before training camp.”: He added, “I’m not going to worry about it.” Burress said he felt that, “It’ll be worked out.”
Burress is scheduled to make $3.25 million this season and then $3.5 million the following season. In 2010, he’s due to earn $3.75 million. By NFL standards, he’s being paid about half of what many other top professional receivers are get. He’s in the middle of a $25 million six-year contract.
Burress, who has said that he wants to play for the Giants, started to make noise about his pay after Randy Moss, Javon Walker and Terrell Owens all signed new, more lucrative deals with their teams. The Giants player will turn 31 in August.
In three seasons with New York, Burress, who played his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has played in 47 of 48 regular season contests. With the Giants, he’s averaged a little over 1,000 yards per season and 15.3 yards per catch. In that triad of seasons, the receiver has caught 29 touchdown passes.
