That American football is followed by millions of sports lovers is a well-known fact. And I bet your name too could be added to the fan list. But how many of us are aware of the technical aspects of the game? How many of us know about the field size and keep knowledge about the methods of scoring?

Many of you might state ‘Does it really matter if we are not well-versed with the rules?’ Unfortunately, the answer is yes. If you are aware of the rules and the intricacies of the game, then it will definitely enhance the enjoyment aspect. You will be able to know the reason behind a particular move taken by a player.

Here are some of the technical aspects of one of the most loved games in the world- Football.

Field: The field where the game actually takes place is 100 yards long and 160 feet wide. The field can be made up of natural grass or it may boast of an artificial turf. Most indoor stadiums sport artificial turfs whereas open-air stadiums have natural grass.

Markings on the field: A typical football field has a center marking i.e. a line drawn at 50 yards. Either side of the 50-yard line has lines at every five yard. Similar, the field also has lines that mark 10 yard, on either side of the 50-yard line. A football field also displays hashes that mark the one-yard interval.

Team and Players: A football match is played between two teams and each team consists of eleven players. The teams have the liberty to substitute their players but substitution can be carried out only when there exists a dead ball. Each team comprises offense, defense and special team. If a team is in possession of the ball, then it will field an offense team, whereas the opposition will field a defense team and vice versa. If the teams are engaged in kicking play, then they may field an offense team.

Scoring: The players always aim for a touchdown. Touchdown allows a player to earn six points. The offense team has to have the ball in its possession and it must try to reach the opposition team’s goal line or catch a pass when in the end zone. If a player is successful in doing the aforementioned points, his team earns six points. The team also gets a chance to kick the ball through the goal post, which earns them an extra point. One can also score point if they successfully tackle an opposition player who is in possession of the ball and who is present in their own end zone.

These are some of the basics of football. Learning about them will make your viewing process more enjoyable.
