Coach Herm Edwards is no longer the man at the helm of the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL coaching ranks have been tumultuous of late with the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and many other teams firing their head coaches. Teams that have missed the post-season, not lived up to their potential or found their fans to be discontent have opted to get rid of the man at the top. Herm Edwards, who was previously the head coach of the New York Jets, has been fired by the Chiefs.
The firing comes on the heels of the hiring of general manager Scott Pioli by the Chiefs. Pioli, who was considered to be one of the master builders of the New England Patriotsβ dynasty, was brought in to rebuild the Kansas City franchise into a Super Bowl contender.
Over three years with the Chiefs, Edwards was 15- 34 and 2- 14 this season. He had one year left in his $12 million four-year deal.
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a team statement, βOn behalf of my family, I want to thank Herm for his service to the Chiefs. After careful deliberation over the last week, Scott and I decided that it was in the best interests of the Chiefs to move forward in a different direction.β He added, βThis was not an easy decision. Herm is an outstanding football coach and a man of integrity. We appreciate his leadership over the past three seasons, and we wish him all the best in the future.β
It is rumored that former Denver Broncosβ coach Mike Shanahan is next in line to lead the Chiefs. Shanahan was fired by the Broncos a few weeks ago.
