The Washington Redskins have release 31 year-old running back Shaun Alexander. Prior to playing for the Skins, Alexander spent eight seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, notching five 1,000-plus yard seasons.
Alexander’s best year has in 2005 when he accumulated 1,880 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. That season the star running back scored 27 rushing touchdowns. He carried the ball a total of 370 times and made 107 first downs. Alexander seemed unstoppable. But in 2006, he suffered foot and wrist injuries and played in just 10 games, gaining only 896 yards. The following year for Seattle, his last, the back played in 13 games, carrying the ball just 207 times for 716 yards.
This season, he was unsigned until the Redskins put him on the roster four weeks ago. In four games, he had 11 carries for 24 yards. Alexander, who is a former NFL MVP, was signed by the Skins to cover for the injured Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts. The team decided to cut Alexander this week to free up room on the roster for defensive players.
Alexander did not play in Sunday’s 20-17 win over the Seahawks.
